Pompano Beach, FL (February 13, 2023) – The World Series of Poker’s latest return to Harrah’s Pompano Beach in South Florida saw tremendous success with shattered guarantees throughout the two weeks of exciting tournaments.
The 16-event stretch saw large turnouts all series long, notably the 1,015-entry field in the $1,700 Main Event which was won by Macomb, Michigan’s Christopher Trombley. From the immense $1,537,725 prize pool, which was more than $500,000 over its guarantee, Trombley took home $266,186 for the win, which was easily the largest career score for the former cash-game player turned tournament crusher.
Trombley defeated another young and promising tournament wizard in Robert Lupo after a nearly four-hour heads-up battle that saw Trombley claw back from a short stack several times heads-up before finally seizing control and claiming victory.
“When I got short, I didn’t panic. I know the gameplan with sub-8 bigs, 5 bigs…just not getting impatient and try to catch the cards as they come,” said the champion following his epic win.
From the huge field, 153 entries earned a piece of the massive prize pool, with some players earning a bit of extra cash by making the money in multiple flights, including 3rd place finisher Ryan Eriquezzo, who cashed on Day 1A before busting, then took another shot on a subsequent flight and spun his stack all the way to the final table and $121,111. He, along with 6th place finisher Jeremy Eyer ($51,816) and 7th place finisher Blake Whittington ($39,981) represented the previous winners of WSOP Circuit rings, with Trombley now joining that exclusive club.
Other notables to cash in the main event included last year’s runner-up James Calderaro (11th – $19,761), Nadya Magnus (51st – $4,377), Athanasios Polychronopoulos (53rd – $4,377), Maxwell Young (70th – $3,822), and Natasha Barbour-Mercier (100th – $3,487)
